The Mac had taken over the pre-press world but our school was a little late to the party, so I still learned to work with paper, ink, huge cameras and chemically developed, rasterized film. I have an education as a pre-press graphic designer and graduated in 1995. Since my schooldays, I haven’t done much work with a mechanical pencil. to R.: Stanley knife, Pentel Side FX 0.5 PD255, HEMA vulpotlood, Pentel Function. The only downside we can find is that they add a strange ambiguity to usually straightforward phrases like “extend the pencil tip.Today, we are honored to have a guest post from Leon of Oude Tonge, Netherlands. In either flavor, extendable grip sections offer convenience and reliability-the best of both worlds. You can’t adjust how long the lead sleeve is when exposed, but this design does have its own little bonus feature: The top push button can’t be pressed when the pencil is closed, so you’ll never have to worry about finding a bunch of accidentally extended lead piled up in broken shards at the bottom of your pencil case. ![]() This lets the grip extend and retract in an instant and lock into either position with a quick twist. It is a simple, dependable design, but depending on how densely threaded the grip section is, it can be a bit tedious to fully extend and retract the grip section.Īlternatively, the pencil can use a spring-loaded mechanism like that of the Uni Shift Pipe Lock. The Ohto Super Promecha 1500P and Platinum Pro-Use 171 both use this implementation. This also lets you decide just how long you want the lead sleeve to be when you’re using the pencil. Then, you can simply twist the grip section one way or the other to move the grip section forward or backward around the tip. One way to do this is by having the grip section attached to the pencil with threading like a screw. ![]() Rather than worry about making the tip extend and retract, the makers of these drafting pencils realized that they could simply make the grip section move forward and backward to shield and expose the lead sleeve as needed. This design offers an interesting third solution. Second, some people find that retractable lead sleeves add a small but noticeable amount of wobbliness to the tip. First, it can get a little annoying to manually push in the lead sleeve every time you finish using your pencil. This is a simple and straightforward mechanism once you know how to use it, but it does have a couple downsides. As soon as you release the top button, the lead sleeve will slide into the tip, where it will stay until called for with a fresh push of the button. To retract the lead sleeve, you need to hold down the top push button, press the tip of the lead sleeve against a firm surface like a table or fingertip, then release the top push button while continuing to press on the lead sleeve. Retracting the lead sleeve is usually a bit more complicated, however. With this sort of drafting pencil, a simple click of the top push button will extend the lead sleeve along with the lead. One of the most common ways manufacturers have solved the problem of pointy lead sleeves is to simply make the lead sleeves retractable. ![]() Planner Stickers, Pens, Stamps, and More.Japanese Stationery: What's the Big Deal?. ![]()
